How to mute one Mac app without muting everything

Mute a distracting app while keeping your meeting, music or video call audible.

The usual Mac problem

Muting the whole Mac is often too much. You may want to silence a notification-heavy browser, pause a game’s audio, or mute a background player while keeping a call audible.

The quick method

  1. Open Mixbar from the menu bar.
  2. Find the app in the list of active audio apps.
  3. Use its individual mute control, or pull its volume slider down.
  4. Restore the app when you are ready; the system volume never moved.

A note about app output settings

If an app is sending sound to a device it selected internally, Mixbar can show it but may not control it. Set that app back to the system default output and try again.
